Sam Houston American Striaght Whiskey

Sam Houston American Straight Whiskey - 86 proof

Purchased on May 31, 2012 in East Granby CT

Purchase price $29

So I was in the store to buy some beer to enjoy with my wonderful wife on a hot Thursday evening. After I choose my beer I decided to stroll by the bourbons just to see what may catch my eye. This particular store has a good selection but their prices are a little higher than some of the others I go to. Recently I have read about some Canadian whiskeys in Whiskey Advocate, so I was going to check those out. Then I see this bottle of Sam Houston Straight Whiskey. Hmmm, this is new, at least to me. So I grab a bottle and head on out.

I got home and enjoyed a beer or two with my wife and then we put the kids to bed and it was time for a taste of the SHW. I found that this is a limited production whiskey, aged in white oak barrels. I was skeptical of this at first because I was wondering if it was just a regular run whiskey. I was pleasantly surprised that it was very enjoyable. The nose was soft, not very strong, it is only 86 proof. But it had hints of vanilla and caramels as expected but only a slight smoky smell. At first taste I found it to have a light, sweet, oaky flavor. I wasn’t sure at this point if I liked it. I had to go in for more.

In conclusion, after I finished the glass, I realized that I really enjoyed this and would have had more, if it was not a work night. I think this is a very smooth tasty whiskey that would be good for anyone, experienced or novice. If you think this is too strong, you need to go back to beer. I believe it was priced reasonably, I see on line it is cheaper than what I paid, so this could be a good one to keep around. However get it while you can, this is a limited production.
Cheers!!
